What Machine Teaching is
Project Cortex: what is it?
Microsoft itself describes it as the tool that leverages the power of artificial intelligence algorithms to help you navigate a company’s skills and resources.
It’s an artificial intelligence designed to connect people with content instantly and intuitively, through a continuous, digitized exchange of knowledge between data and people.
Project Cortex uses AI to process your content across Microsoft 365 and deliver the most innovative and digitized experiences possible.
The system links information across every application in your Microsoft 365 tenant. This lets users access data in apps like Microsoft Teams and Outlook and then see it organized intuitively inside SharePoint collections.
Through a knowledge network that reasons over your organization’s data and automatically organizes it into shared topics such as projects and clients, Project Cortex delivers important information to members of the organization through topic cards and topic pages inside the apps they use every day.

Microsoft has always focused on search capabilities, letting users search across the entire Office 365 suite and immediately get relevant information at their fingertips.
Project Cortex is the natural evolution of that system.
The ways people learn and share information, including documents, emails, recordings, and more, are analyzed and organized into topics that become immediately and intuitively accessible to the users who need them.
Project Cortex: the benefits for companies
Project Cortex helps users to:
-
Manage, connect, and protect content with a secure, advanced workflow.
-
Automatically organize the way data is learned
-
Empower people in their day-to-day work
The productivity Microsoft wants to achieve with Project Cortex is aimed at helping people create, analyze, collaborate, write, present, organize, and manage their work through cutting-edge experiences.
Thanks to Project Cortex, every team in an organization gains deeper knowledge and expertise in the apps they work with, leading to better performance and, as a result, higher productivity.
AI is in fact an innovative step forward in knowledge management.
The goal is to simplify business processes with security, compliance, and automation.
With Project Cortex, the flow of information is guaranteed and amplified.
The more technology advances, the more efficiently and precisely information can be accessed.
This gives people the power to excel in their roles, which represents the greatest competitive advantage for a company.

Is Project Cortex secure?
Yes. Project Cortex only gathers knowledge from your own organization and stays fully aligned with the standard security and compliance controls already in Microsoft 365. This means it will follow the same restrictions you’ve set up in each app.
For example, users who aren’t part of a given team in your organization won’t suddenly be able to access that team’s data. Your company’s information barriers and retention labels continue to be enforced.
Project Cortex and Machine Teaching
To wrap up, let’s take a closer look at the machine learning that Project Cortex relies on.
Its system, in fact, makes use of Machine Teaching.
In other words, Project Cortex enables efficient business processes by turning content into an interactive knowledge repository (with new capabilities for smart content ingestion) to analyze documents and extract metadata in order to build sophisticated content models.
The goal is to let subject matter experts teach the system how to interpret semi-structured content and retrieve knowledge, making it easier to access valuable information that’s often buried in documents, conversations, meetings, and videos.
