Breadcrumbs for the SharePoint intranet : What are the benefits ?

The web part to navigate throughthe contents of the SharePoint intranet.

Our component displays the path to reach a specific page within the SharePoint intranet, enhancing the user navigation experience.

Breadcrumbs for the SharePoint intranet: What are the benefits?

It is often difficult to navigate through the numerous contents populating the company intranet, especially when news and updates are shared across separate communication channels. To help the company make all its content more accessible, we have designed breadcrumbs: once added to a SharePoint page, they will automatically display the navigation path to the content being viewed. This makes it easier to understand which area of the intranet hosts each page, guiding users in exploring the site.

Discover the collections that bring together news posts

Our web part can be added to any page of the SharePoint intranet, typically at the beginning or the end, to display each step of the path connecting the page itself to the folders or site areas that host it. For example, a colleague might receive the link to a communication published on the intranet. Upon accessing it, they could notice from the breadcrumb that the post they are reading is part of the broader "Eco News" collection. By clicking on the collection name shown in the breadcrumb, they could then access the area that gathers all corporate news related to sustainability.

Enrich your company's knowledge base

Together with Pages Menu, In This Page, and Contributors, this web part can help simplify navigation within the internal knowledge base. Similar to what happens with a news article, when a user accesses a documentation page shared by a colleague, they can trace back, thanks to the integrated breadcrumb, to the knowledge base section that centralizes information on a specific topic. This way, they can find everything they need to do their job without wasting time searching.

Simple configuration

We take care of configuring the component according to your company's needs. However, we have designed Breadcrumbs to be an intuitive web part. Like most of the intranet.ai components,ย it can be managed independently thanks to constantly updated documentation.
Easy setup

Configure the breadcrumb to match your intranet structure

The web part adapts to how your SharePoint intranet is organized. From the General settings you can choose whether to display the page name or its title, do the same for folders, and rename the first-level "Home" label. A breadcrumb cutting path lets you show only part of the hierarchy from a chosen URL segment onward, while "Home" always remains visible. You can also exclude specific folders from the displayed path through the Filters section.

Control appearance and homepage behavior

View settings let you tailor how the breadcrumb looks on the page. You can toggle the white card background and its shadow, and select a High Contrast, Light, or Dark shadow style. The title can be customized or hidden, defaulting to "Breadcrumb" when left blank. For subsites, you decide whether the Home link points to the subsite or the site collection homepage, and whether it opens in the current page or a new tab, keeping navigation consistent across the intranet.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Breadcrumb web part do?

It displays the hierarchical path of the current SharePoint page, showing each level that connects a page to the folders or site areas hosting it. This helps users understand where content sits within the intranet and backtrack through parent pages, supporting faster navigation and a standardized information structure.

How do I make the breadcrumb links clickable for navigation?

To activate breadcrumb navigation links, a page named "Home" must be created at every level of the path. The page name must be exactly "Home," though the title displayed in the breadcrumb can differ. Once these pages exist, each step in the path becomes a working link back to the corresponding section.

Can I show only part of the navigation path?

Yes. The General settings include a breadcrumb cutting path option, where you specify a URL segment so the web part displays only a partial hierarchy from that point onward. The "Home" level always remains visible. You can also use the Filters section to exclude specific folders from the displayed path.

How is the Breadcrumb web part added to a SharePoint page?

It is added in page edit mode through the web part search, where it appears as "IAI - Breadcrumb" in SharePoint Online. It can be placed on any page of the intranet, typically at the top or bottom, and supports multi-tier paths including subsite navigation.
